Focus Group and Feedback

We got a group of 3 and we asked them a series of questions.
Here are our results.

Q1 - What genre do you think our film is?

Person A) Looking at the film opening I can gather a few bits of information and I can have a good guess that the genre is action.

Person B) I think it may be action due to the confrontation between the two different sets of boys (the group of 3)

Person C) Action because of the handling of what appears to be drugs.

Q2 - What part did you enjoy the most?

Person A) I enjoyed the start of the film the actor doing his hair and shoes, something interesting must be happening, he's also wearing a watch which shows that he's going somewhere important.

Person B) The part when all the boys meet up, I think something big is going to happen. Maybe a fight or something.

Person C) When the boy on his own looked and gave the 3 boys a hand signal, I think there must have been a dispute in the past between these 2 groups of people.

Q3 - How do you thing the film would end?

Person A) I recon the film would end in a fight, I recon the 3 boys would go out looking for the other lad that they saw across the street.

Person B) The boy on his own would go and find his mates and then come back to where the other 3 boys where and then a massive brawl would happen.

Person C) I think that the boys would do the drugs that they got and go off to a football match and then cause trouble. The other lad on his own would be in the away end and then a massive fight would happen outside the ground.

Q4 - Would you watch the rest of our film by just watching our opening?

Person A) Yes I would, their was some tension between the boys which would end in a fight most likely, and I really enjoy watching films with violence in them. So yes I would watch the rest of the film.

Person B) Most likely, it looks interesting and I would want to see what the other boys would do if they saw the boy on his own again.

Person C) I would certainly carry on watching the film. I can get a sense of football violence, I really enjoy football violence films, its one of my favourite types of films.

Q5 - What are your thoughts on location?

Person A) I think the locations that have been used are good. The start of the opening you see a boy doing his hair at home in a mirror which isn't braking any conventions. Where the drug deal is happening is good too, the changeover is where you'd usually see a drug deal. In an empty place.

Person B) I thought that the use of location was good. I think lots of thought has gone into the consideration of the choice of location.

Person C) Location that was used in the film was very interesting. I also thought that it didn't break any conventions.

Q6 - What are your thoughts on the props used?

Person A) I think that the props used where good. Usually in action movies you see lots of fighting and drug use. The use of what appears to be drugs works very well with the genre and does not break any conventions.

Person B) The clothing that the boys wore was very good and fitted very well with the genre. You usually see people in smart/branded clothes in action movies and the boys in the film wore and stuck to the convention.

Person C) Using the phone to meet up with the lads mate was good and was a good use of a prop. Also leaning against the ped in a sort of a fashionable way. The use of props was good.

Reasearch into Target Audience

Research into audience

We came to a conclusion that our audience would be 14-18 year olds that enjoy football and violence.

We got this information from our questionnaire that we made online, researching into our audience is vital because without an audience a movie/film is nothing at all.

Our target audience is so very niche because not many people are interested in football violence films.

We tried to stay to conventions well and correctly because we wanted out target audience to recognise these conventions:

·         Drugs

·         Violence

·         Beer

Our film opening was based on football violence, the conventions you tend to see in football violence films are: Fighting, arguments, brawls, drugs and ‘casual’ clothes. In our opening we tried to meet and match the typical conventions found in a football hooligan film.

We tried hard not to break any of the conventions too. In football violence films we see lots of ‘casual’ clothes. We’ve tried to expand this convention by using designer clothes, for example one of our actors was wearing an ellesse jacket, ellesse is an old brand that a majority of hooligans used to wear in the 1980’s and in recent times has started to come back into fashion.

Our production represents ‘hooligans’ and ‘casuals’ well. Everything from the clothing to the way they walk and what they are doing. Football hooliganism normally involves conflict between gangs, often known as football formed for the specific purpose of intimidating and physically attacking supporters of other teams.

Other terms commonly used in connection with hooligan firms include. Certain clubs have long-standing rivalries with other clubs and hooliganism associated with matches between them (sometimes called local derbies), is likely to be more severe. In our opening we see a group of 3 boys walking; they see a lad from another firm walking along the other side of the road. We see a dispute from the different fans. This is a convention that we usually see in football hooligan films and we have matched it.

Football violence is a niche market in the film industry; there aren’t many films in this genre available to watch. The institution that would make the film would be Warp films; they’ve made the following films:

This is England, Four lions.

The distributor for our film would most likely be supermarkets to sell on DVD’s because the market is so niche that not many people would see it in the cinema at the time of viewing.

To get information on our target audience we looked at our questionnaire to get a brief idea on who we wanted to base our film on. The results from our questionnaire showed that the majority of people that took part where males between the age of 14 – 18. With young males taking an interest with football and violence we thought that aiming at that social group would be the most beneficial thing for our movie.

нσω ∂ι∂ уσυ αттяα¢т тнє αυ∂ιєη¢є؟

We found that attracting our target audience was relatively simple and easy. Because the football violence market is so small, people that watch these types of movies will watch them for sure.

Making the film opening I’ve learnt how to use the camera and other additional things. The aperture on the camera affects the lighting within the camera and what the camera focuses on; I’ve learnt how to change these features. To edit we used adobe premiere pro and adobe after effects, premier pro is used to put all the clips together and after effects is used for titles.

In our preliminary task we used a variety of half decent angles, nothing special. With research into the best angles to use we combined both research and our preliminary task to create well shot angles which we used in our main task. We also used this combination of researching and using our preliminary task to have the best end product and we did this also with editing and titles. The editing in our preliminary task was very jumpy when we put it together. Using the experience from our preliminary task we made sure we didn’t make the same mistake again.

Questionnaire Evaluation

Evaluation of Questionnaire
Question 1 shows us that our target market is clearly males but must also account for a small amount of female viewers

Question 2 shows that the average age of the target audience is 14-18 but with some viewers in the age bands above and below, this is good as it would fit the films probable age rating.

Question 3 shows that fans of the genre would generally rate violence and thrillers a 4/5 which means on average the thoroughly enjoy the genre and is generally a genre that everyone enjoys.

Question 4 shows what part of the film the audience enjoys most and in this case it is clear that their favourite part of the film is the build up to the fight

Question 5 gets the audiences opinion on where they would expect a film of this sub genre to be set and they answer was in a town, which works well for the opening and then eventually move near a stadium if the film was to carry on.

Unsurprisingly the most chosen answer when asked what you would expect to see in a football hooligan film was violence.

Question 7 was used to find out what people wouldn't expect to see in this sub genre and find out what we needed to stay away from in the intro.

Question 8 and 9 were more about how and how often people watch films and not to do with how and what we should put in the intro. We found out from these questions that the most people watch these films a month is once and they watch it on a variety of platforms raging from Online, Cinema and subscription services. However not many people watch films on television now.
